Black Movement Thought is Cross Cultural Solidarity’s monthly discussion group. Each month we pair a text from Black movement history with a text from contemporary movement thinkers. For example: for our first sessions, we paired Stokely Carmichael’s thinking about the meaning and purpose of power with Alicia Garza’s, and W.E.B. Du Bois’ thinking about how racism harms democracy, the economy, and society’s institutions for everyone with Heather McGhee’s thinking on that subject.
This will be an excellent and highly accessible way to be introduced to leading thinkers and activists today, while grounding yourself in the historical legacy. All texts will be short: essays and chapters, not books. All texts will be sent to the participants, so there won’t be any need to purchase materials. The conversations will be facilitated, and will offer a simple way to plug into inspiration and community each month.
In order to be accessible to folks from coast to coast, we’ll have an earlier session that meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 3PM Pacific/6PM Eastern, and a session that meets on the first Thursday of each month, 6PM Pacific/9PM Eastern. Please come to whichever time works best for you.
If you would like to participate, email Burnett.Lynn@Gmail.com. I like to get to know new participants, so just let me know a little something about how you discovered this, what kind of racial justice work you do and/or interests you have, and I’ll happily add you to the email list!
