November 26: A facilitated discussion on the full range of Gandhi’s connections with African Americans, including Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, and Martin Luther King’s future mentors, Howard Thurman and Benjamin Mays.
December 5: On the anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, come discuss the true history of that moment, including a very different, radical presentation of Rosa Parks, a range of powerful women and grassroots leaders, and the emergence of Bayard Rustin as Martin Luther King’s mentor and startegist.
Monthly Meetup group
The Cross-Cultural Solidarity History Education Project hosts a monthly, public discussion group in San Francisco. All are welcome to join!
Lectures and Facilitated Discussions
I’m always happy to give lectures or to facilitate discussions around any of the histories that I write about. I consider myself more of a storyteller than a lecturer, and especially enjoy interacting with small audiences where people feel free to engage with their curiosities and questions, which allows a lot of learning to take place and facilitates community building. I consider myself a community educator; and view education as a way to build meaningful community.
I am always happy to support teachers in whatever way I can. For those in the Bay Area, that can mean facilitating discussion groups with history teachers who want to take a deeper dive into this material, or it can mean coming into the classroom and talking with students. I am happy to discuss any of the histories I have composed, as well as more general subjects like the civil rights movement, white allyship in U.S. history, black internationalism, etc. Contact me and we can figure out what would best serve the students and the local teacher community.
For Racial Justice Communities
You are my extended community. I engage in racial justice work as well, and I see a deeper understanding of history as an important foundation for that work. I’m happy to help any group working towards racial justice, or just trying to develop a deeper consciousness around racial justice history. Contact me and we can explore what would work best for your group.
